Story about writer's friendship with a Moroccan he met while prospecting for oil in the Spanish Sahara. The Moroccan, Driss, worked at a nearby lighthouse so that he could return home to fill his father's position as the local lighthouse-keeper. The two became close friends, sharing the special solitudes of the sea and desert with eachother neither looked forward to the inevitable parting. Driss's training was drawing to a close and it became obvious that there was no oil. They decided to at least leave together.
