Internationalized homophobia and substance use among lesbian, gay, and bisexual persons

D. Amadio, Y. Chung

The purpose of the study was to determine the relationship between internalized homophobia and use of alcohol, marijuana, and cigarettes, as well as problems associated with alcohol and general substance use. Participants were 207 lesbian, gay, and bisexual persons recruited at a gay pride festival in Atlanta, GA. Significant negative correlations were found for females between internalized homophobia and lifetime use of alcohol, marijuana, and cigarettes, as well as monthly use of marijuana. No significant relationships were found for males. Research and practical implications are discussed.[Copies are available from: Haworth Document Delivery Center.
