Political changes in Cuba in the early 1990s paved the way for foreign investment, sex tourism, and a demand for sex workers (which had not existed since the Revolution); because male sex workers tend to play a penetrative sexual role, they are not considered an insult to Cuban masculinity and are more tolerated than female prostitues.
