
Human rights, hate crimes, and Hebrew-Christian scripture

This article seeks to contribute to a culture of human rights by challenging theuse of Hebrew and Christian scriptures to characterize LGBT persons as moraltransgressors and to justify or rationalize hate crimes against them. Scripturalpassages used to support claims of immorality of LGBT persons-texts of terror-are examined. Then scriptural passages that are affirming of LGBT relationships-texts of empowerment-are considered. The author discusses implications for social work of advancing a culture of human rights.
