When Theo Gittings, distinguished author and member of the literary establishment, dies in a squalid boardinghouse, it is left to his cousin and longtime friend to settle his affairs. In the process, he stumbles upon Theo's journal - fragmented, encoded, disquised, but explicit enough to show that this brilliant talented man had led an extraordinary double life: a life of sexual subterfuge and political treason. Theo's journal lays bare the twilight world of the "lost generation" that inhabited Cambridge of between the two world wars, mapping out the sexual and political underground.
