This work is concerned with understanding men's and women's lives in the ancient world. The first half of the book considers the interpretation of erotic dreams, the sexual behaviour of political candidates and the ways in which men might have compelled women to submit. The second half of the book discusses the misunderstanding of women's power in the ancient world and reconstructs an alternate understanding of men's and women's values within the community.
