This novel tells the story of Michael, a gay advertising executive who is unexpectedly awarded custody of his nephew, Scott, after Scott's parents die in an automobile accident. Scott's grandfather, a powerful North Carolina senator, is vehemently opposed to this arrangement and launches a public court battle. After Michael wins, the story continues to unfold, albeit now though the eyes of Scott, who grows up in the center of Michael's eccentric and madcap world. Scott watches his uncle with adoration, amusement, and occasional anger.
