Written in the wake of WWI, The Scarlet Pansy tells the story of Fay Etrange (a women, in the original publication a man Randall Etrange), whose sexual orientation takes her from the arms of one man to another. An important work in the history of gay literature, emerging in the heat of what was known as "the Pansy craze" of the late 1920s in which gay men and women began to be more visible in the major American cities. This novel is bolder in its descriptions of gay culture than most literary works dared at the time.
