Engel's heroine, Audrey Moore visits a island which bear much resemblance to Cyprus and senses that for her the place is a one-way-street-Monodromos. Audrey attempts to fathom the rich cultural confusion of an island which has changed so much. Audrey Moore's marriage has failed, her lover is married to someone else. She receives a telegram summoning her to the island, to save her estranged homosexual husband from financial disaster.
