Burt Stokes displaces his fascination with one of his students, Anthony, a gifted writer who has died before the novel begins, onto two others, Liam and Nell. The novel's first two sections detail Burt's haphazardly formed sexual bonds first with Liam, then with Nell, both of whom were intimate with Anthony.
