The Mandingoes were a Hamitic tribe of the western Sudan. Timbuktu was the Mandingo Kingdom's capital. The Mandingoes are not negroes. Notwithstanding, they were lumped with the true Negroes and enslaved. Mandingo brings to vivid life the sounds, the smells, the terrible reality of the slave-breeding farms and plantations where men and women were mated and bred like cattle. The novel include homosexual characters.
