Detective novel introduces John Mekkler, a bourbon-drinking, amphetamine swallowing, homosexual street cop who reads Keats. His milieu is the streets of New York. Mekkler is forced out of the department by a new superior, lieutenant Dunne. He seeks solace with an old friend and teacher, Edward Riever. There is no solace. Riever is dead, hanged. Mekkler realised it could not be suicide. He begins to ask questions.
