In this novel Mitchell drew on some of his own recent experiences. Harold Barlow, the central character, is a typical Mitchell hero, intelligent, amiable, rather inept, when he conveys a tourist's eye view of life in the hipster subculture of California. Meanwhile, beneath the respectable surface of Los Angeles lurks a darker world, embodied in Eddie Jackson, anarchist and amoralist.
