Many years after Tom Lennings death the narrator of this story first sees his picture, and he begins a journey towards knowing and discovering all that he can about the 19th Century Boston aristocrat who could never find true love although he was loved by many people, both men and woman. As the narrator pores over letters and journals, retracing Tom's steps in Boston and elsewhere, he reaslizes that perhaps he is the one that Tom waited so long for - and perhaps Tom is his only hope for love.
