In this play Rattigan presents us with a sensitive, penetrating, and highly dramatic study of the strange, enigmatic soldier-artist, T.E. Lawrence (1888-1935) later to be known as Lawrence of Arabia. Why did Lawrence seek oblivion in the Royal Air Force at the very height of his fame? Why did he wish to destroy the legend which he helped to create? Mr Rattigan supplies some convincing answers.
