The fifth novel of the twelve-volume work 'A dance to the Music of Time' plays in the mid-thirties, when conversation in England was dominated by the abdication crisis and the Spanish Civil War. These events form the background to the novel that tells the story of the loves and lives of Nick Jenkins and his friends and yet these hardly concerns them. Casanova's Chinese Restaurant is about heterosexual marriage. The subtile homosexual scenes in the book are easily missed.
