Lady Eleanor Butler aged thirty-four, and Miss Sarah Ponsonby then aged seventeen, eloped from Southern Ireland, and in 1780 they set up home in Plas Newydd overlooking Llangollen in North Wales, to live together in loving harmony for the next fifty years. Although both Lady Eleanor and Sarah came from Irish aristocracy, their shocking failure to comply to the family marriage plans and run away together caused them to retreat from the attentions of society, preferring to live a reclusive life.
