
Legitimatizing Transsexualism

Brief history of the early development of transsexualism in Germany in the first part of the twentieth century with a concentration on developments in the United States which mostly followed the appearance of Christine Jorgensen. The author, personally involved in many of the early phases of the movement, recounts his own participation, emphasizing the problems and issues that took place on the American scene, particularly in the Los Angeles area in the period before 1980. The article concludes with a brief overview of the situation as of this writing.
