Biracial lesbian and bisexual women : understanding the unique aspects and interactional processes of multiple minority identities

J. STANLEY

Biracial lesbian and bisexual women experience interrelated aspects of multiple identities throughout their lives. This interplay of gender (female), race/ethnicity (biracial), and sexual identity (lesbian and bisexual) offers insight into the complexities of ingroup/outgroup status, multiple community membership, and visible/nonvisible identification. Models of identity development are discussed suggesting a move away from antiquated singularized or dichotomous categories of identity to more inclusive paradigms. The unique issues facing biracial sexual minority women are addressed as well as recommendations to assist mental health providers in their work with female clients with multiple minority statuses.[Copies are available from: Haworth Document Delivery Center.
