Chain bookstores increasingly control the book market in the US, and independent feminist bookstores are unable to compete; between 1997-2001, the number of feminist bookstores in the US and Canada declined by 30% (from 120 to 74); this lack of alternative distribution channels also has consequences for the publishing of feminist books (which tend to sell less well in huge chain stores).
