On the occasion of the presentation to Jack Drescher, MD of Gay & Lesbian Analysts_ (GALA) 7th annual award for outstanding contributions to the gay and lesbian community
K. Lewes
Gay and Lesbian Analysts (GALA) was established in 1992 as an informal gathering of analysts in the New York metropolitan area. As lesbian and gay men began organizing themselves within their analytic institutes, interest developed in establishing contact with people at other institutes. Sharing experiences at different institutes enabled lesbian and gay analysts to go back to their own institutes to implement further changes. This continues to be an ongoing process within the organization. In order to recognize and honor those analysts who have had significant impact within psychoanalysis on behalf of gay and lesbian issues, the Annual GALA Outstanding Achievement Award was conceived. Jack Drescher, Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Gay & Lesbian Psychotherapy, was the award recipient in October of 2000. What follows are the remarks made by Kenneth Lewes, PhD, in making the award presentation.<Copies are available from: Haworth Document Delivery Center.
