The publication of Margaret Reynolds' book The Sappho Companion, which appraises the meaning of Sappho's literary legacy through the ages as well as her importance for contemporary lesbians, is the occasion for this article which discusses how Sappho has been critically understood through history as well as the meaning of her poetry for lesbians today. Also included is a sidebar on holidays for lesbians to the Greek island of Lesbos.
