The three earlier autobiographical books by Arthur Koestler, in an edition uniform with The Invisible Writing, are Dialoge with Death, Scum of the Earth and Arrow in the Blue. Dialogue with Death deals with the author's imprisonment under sentence of death in the Spanish Civil War; Scum of the Earth with his adventures in the Second World War, his experiences in various concentration camps, and as a member of the French Foreign Legion. Arrow in the Blue describes his childhood and youth, up to his joining the Communist Party at the age of twenty-six - the point at which the narrative of The Invisible Writing begins".
