James Joyce's schooldays
Bruce Bradley, Richard Ellmann
In 1888, James Joyce entered Clongowes Wood College, a Jesuit establishment about twenty five miles from Dublin. He stayed there for three years. Following a two-years hiatus, his Jesuit education resumed in 1893 when he enrolled at Belvedere College, Dublin, where he completed his secondary studies in 1898. These years form the background to four of the five chapters of A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. Not only does Bruce Bradley identify the real people on whom Joyce based his characters, he produces photographs of them.
