Rupert Brooke : his life and his legend

John Lehmann

The legend of the handsome young poet Rupert Brooke, who died on his way to the Gallipoli campaign in 1915, is still alive tough critical opinion has to a large extent turned against the 1914 Sonnets which made him famous. John Lehmann believes that the time has come to take a fresh look at the making of the legend and at Rupert Brooke´s whole achievement in prose as well as poetry. In particular he looks at Rupoert Brooke in the light of his poetic contemporaries and, in addition, he fills in certain episodes in his emotional life which have previously been all but ignored.
