Homosexual culture has adapted many recognizable symbols. One figure that can be found throughout western gay male visual culture, dating even a century back, would be the sailor. In this paper will be discussed the way Paul Cadmus, Charles Demuth, and Tom of Finland utilize the sailor in their art.
