Darling Madame : Sarah Grand and devoted friend

G. Kersley

The late 19th century 'New Woman' novelists demanded social and sexual equality for women, and Sarah Grand was one of their earliest and most formidable representatives. Born in 1854, married at sixteen, bestselling author of 'Heavenly Twins' and 'The Beth Book', she left her husband to become 'a woman of genius', novelist and lecturer. She spent the latter half of her life as the Mayoress of Bath and the object of passion for Gladys Singers-Bigger, a woman thirthy years younger than herself. Based on new research and unpublished material, this biography also includes the diaries of Gladys, in which she recorded her years of passionate devotion to 'Darling Madame'.
