Strategy and policy implementation for gender identity disorders in Cuba: state of the art

The National Commission for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Gender Identity Disorders in Cuba was founded in 1979 as a result of a proposal of the Federation of Cuban Women to the Ministry of Health. Almost ten years later the first cuban citizen underwent a sex reassignment surgery. Since that moment the number of cases has increased. The National Center for Sexual Education (CENESEX) has focused a strategy outline for the treatment of gender identity disorders. Up to this moment 73 patients have been evaluated at the CENESEX. Among them, 25 have been diagnosed as gender identity disorder, 23 are male to female and only 2 female to male.
